When most travelers book a trip to the Dominican Republic, they head straight for Punta Cana or Puerto Plata. I’ve visited both, but my most recent stay brought me to Samaná, a quieter corner of the island where palm trees lean over empty stretches of sand and time moves slower. Getting there takes effort—a nearly four hour drive from Santo Domingo—but once I arrived, I realized why the journey is worth it.

A Family-Friendly Retreat at Wyndham Alltra Samaná

I began my getaway at Wyndham Alltra Samaná, an all-inclusive resort that opened in 2024. Located along a secluded beach, it felt like a secret hideaway. On my first night, I kicked off my sandals and enjoyed fresh seafood under the stars with the waves as my soundtrack.

Over the next few days, I explored at my own pace—lounging by the pool, joining beachfront yoga or curling up in quiet corners with a book. The staff made the property feel welcoming without being overwhelming. Families, couples and friends mixed easily, proving that Samaná can deliver both relaxation and fun without the crowds of more popular destinations.

An Adults-Only Escape at Viva V Samaná

After three nights, I shifted to Viva V Samaná by Wyndham. If Wyndham Alltra felt like a warm hug, Viva V was the cool, stylish friend who knows all the best spots. Rooms were steps away from the beach and I never had to walk far for the pool, a meal or a cocktail.

My highlight was a full-body massage offered right on the sand. Listening to the waves while getting a spa treatment outdoors was one of the most restorative experiences I’ve had in years. Meals were just as memorable—from seafood at Mar y Fuego to international dishes at Fusión. For women traveling with friends, this adults-only resort offered both safety and sophistication in a relaxed environment.

Exploring Los Haitises National Park

Of course, no trip to Samaná is complete without stepping beyond the resorts. For me, that meant a day trip to Los Haitises National Park, a protected area of mangroves, caves and limestone formations. Cruising through the waterways by boat, I spotted flocks of birds, drifted past thick mangrove roots and stepped inside caves decorated with Indigenous paintings that have survived for centuries.

Many travelers don’t realize that Samaná also carries a strong African influence, woven into its rhythms, cuisine, and cultural traditions. It’s a side of the Dominican Republic that often gets overlooked in favor of pool bars and buffets, and being out on the water reminded me why I love seeing destinations from a different angle.

Beaches That Feel Like Your Own

Unlike Punta Cana, where lounge chairs line every stretch of sand, Samaná’s beaches feel wide open. I found palm trees bending dramatically toward turquoise water, perfect for shade and solitude. Some days I lingered with a cocktail; other times I stayed until sunset painted the sky pink and orange.

I felt safe walking alone without the need to look over my shoulder. For women traveling with friends, the wide-open beaches, quiet spaces and natural beauty make Samaná a perfect destination for a relaxing, rejuvenating getaway.

Travel Tips for Visiting Samaná

Reaching Samaná requires planning. The closest airport is Santo Domingo, followed by a scenic drive through mountains and small towns. Pack for flexibility—weather can change quickly—and set aside time for both resorts and excursions.

Whether you chase waterfalls at El Limón, explore Los Haitises, enjoy wellness treatments or lounge by the pool, Samaná rewards travelers who slow down. Its authentic charm, uncrowded beaches and welcoming resorts make it an ideal spot for a girlfriends’ getaway.
