When I got the email saying I’d been selected to explore Delaware County through a local tourism partnership, I was excited! I’ve really been wanting to lean into more local adventures lately — trips that don’t require a passport, but still offer something new. The idea of discovering a part of New York State I’d never really heard much about sounded perfect.
But once I started researching Delaware County, my excitement turned into hesitation. One article mentioned that parts of the region bordered what could be considered sundown towns, and as a Black woman, that immediately made me pause. I love exploring new places, but I also travel with awareness — and there are certain things you just have to consider for your own safety and peace of mind.
I talked it over with my partner, who encouraged me to still go and do what I do best: tell the the truth. And that’s exactly what I decided to do. I’ve never been the kind of creator to paint everything as perfect just because a trip is sponsored. My goal is always to show the real experience, whatever that looks like.
The drive from the city had a few moments that made us uneasy — those small towns you pass through that give off a certain energy you can’t quite name but definitely feel. But the second we arrived in Delaware County, that tension melted away. Everyone we met was so welcoming, curious, and genuinely kind. It didn’t feel performative. It felt like community.
Over the weekend, I got to see how layered and beautiful this part of New York really is. I biked the Catskill Scenic Trail surrounded by gold and rust-colored leaves, rode a vintage train through picture-perfect fall landscapes, visited art galleries and local shops, and stayed in a charming B&B where mornings started with good coffee and conversation. It wasn’t flashy or overly curated — and that’s exactly what made it special.
There’s something grounding about being in a place that moves at its own pace. Delaware County reminded me that peace doesn’t always mean isolation — sometimes it means stillness, fresh air, and a reminder that kindness can show up anywhere.
I went into the trip unsure of what I’d find. What I found instead was warmth, creativity, and a small-town charm that made me feel both safe and seen. And that’s the kind of surprise that keeps me traveling.
