You ever talk to someone and immediately feel their passion come through in every word? That’s exactly how I felt during my recent livestream chat with Adanna Asson — a powerhouse in the world of Caribbean public relations and a true advocate for creatives.
Adanna’s journey into PR started with something beautifully simple: a quiet car ride with her father, listening to classic calypso. That one moment sparked a curiosity not just about the music, but about the people behind it — the creators, the storytellers, the voices often overlooked. And just like that, a seed was planted.
What followed was a series of full-circle moments. From connecting with her mentor Natasha Andrews in New York to working behind the scenes with The Asylum Band and launching her own entertainment site, Adanna found herself drawn to the why behind artists and creatives who struggled to tell their stories. And she wanted to help.
One of the most impactful parts of our conversation? When Adanna talked about the disconnect she often sees between Caribbean creatives and the media. Many, she says, don’t know how to talk about themselves or what parts of their story to share — and that’s where she comes in. With a journalism and media communications background, Adanna uses her skills to not only pitch stories, but to build them.
“I really see an opportunity here where I can help,” she said. And that she does.
We also got personal — Adanna shared how choosing public relations over journalism was, in part, about creating her own identity. With a family member already established in the journalism world, she knew she wanted a path that allowed her to show up authentically — and PR gave her the space to do just that.
Whether you’re a creative, a publicist, or just someone trying to find your lane, this chat is full of gems. Trust me, you’ll want to watch the entire conversation.
